Networking as an Artist

Connections, Connections

Artistry is a full-time job, so it can be crazy to think that you also need to take control of networking the unique pieces you bring to fruition. It’s crucial, however, as an artist that you establish good relationships and genuine connections that can help you in the long run. It’s not about just knowing the name, but truly checking in with people that could potentially be a gateway to get your foot in the door at a gallery exhibition. As they say, it’s all about “who you know”, so why not take advantage of the internet to expand that list?

Social Media Strikes Again

Creating relationships with people over the internet can be challenging. It’s difficult to convey genuine tones over a text or Instagram message; however, it is a great way to initiate contact with people. When you see a gallery or exhibition you’re interested in getting involved in, take a second glance at the people who were there. Who was tagged in the posts on the official Instagram? Who were the coordinators of the event? Social media and the internet as a whole make that information readily available, so try to take advantage of it! Don’t be afraid to direct message people, add them as friends on LinkedIn, or retweet their pieces occasionally. A genuine compliment, or simple remark, goes a long way and can lead to a cup of coffee that sets a precedent for your career.

Goal Setter

While you take a break from messaging people, take a second to think about your end goal. It’s important to know what you truly want so you can properly chase it. This also will ensure you aren’t barking up the wrong tree, or potentially closing yourself off to opportunities that could present themselves. This doesn’t have to be boring; you can use your creative talent here too!
